Town of AltaVista Business License Requirements
To operate a business in the Town of Altavista, a business must first must obtain a business license. Licenses may be obtained at Town Hall during regular business hours. Licenses expire at the end of each year. For existing businesses, renewal applications are mailed out in January and must be returned with the license fee no later than March 1.

Bedford County Business License Requirements
Bedford County does not require a general County Business License. Depending on the type of business, however, a business may be required to apply for other specialty licenses or permits from Bedford County.

Amherst County Business License Requirements
All businesses located in Amherst County, except for retail and wholesale businesses, are required to obtain a Business license and pay a business license tax. The license tax is based on gross receipts based upon the following schedule:
If gross receipts are under $50, 000, there is a $10.00 license tax. If the amount of gross receipts is over $50,000 see the following rates apply: · Contractors - $.13 per $100 of gross receipt · Services - $.31 per $100 of gross receipts · Professional - $.50 per $100 of gross receipts · Itinerant Merchants - $200.00 - 30 days or $500.00 annually · Peddlers - $50.00 annually · Door to Door - $20.00 annually

Town of Amherst - Business License Requirements
Businesses operating in the Town of Amherst, Amherst County, virginia are required to obtain a local business license. Information can be obtained from the Town of Amherst, Treasurer, P.O. Box 280, Amherst, VA 24521. A copy of the application is available in the downloads section of this website. The Application is due on/or before April 1st of each year. The minimum license fee is $30.00. A 10% penalty will be added after April 1st. 10% annual interest will be added monthly until paid in full. All businesses located in the City of Lynchburg are required to obtain a license. The business license fee is based on gross receipts/purchases. The following schedule is utilized to determine the amount of the business license tax:

Understanding the difference between our "Articles,News and Announcemnts" feature and "News and Announcements from the Community." News and Announcements from the Community is intended to be an organized community "blog" which enables all registered users to submit and self approve for posting news and announcements on a variety of topics relevant to daily life in Lynchburg, and Amherst, Bedford and Campell Counties. That feature is unmoderated, thus registered users have the flexible ability to post news and announcements relative to the topic. Submission to that category will be "pruned" after a reasonable period of time.

- City of Lynchburg: Portions of City Parks & Trails Closed for Repair (2010/1/25)
Recent damage due to localized flooding of creeks and streams has left some parks and trails in a state of disrepair. Work crews will be cleaning up mud and debris, removing downed trees, and assessing damage over the next several weeks.
The bridge access to Percival's Island will be closed from Monday, January 25 beginning at 6:00 p.m., and will reopen some time on Tuesday, January 26, after James River levels have receded.
Pedestrians and bike riders will not be able to access Percival's Island from Lynchburg during this period. Trail users accessing RiverWalk from Amherst County will be precluded from utilizing the bridge leading into Lynchburg.

- City of Lynchburg: Bird Lovers Day at Community Market (2010/1/25)
On Saturday, January 30, the Community Market, located at 1219 Main Street, will present its annual Bird Lovers Day by welcoming local authors, clubs, nature groups and all bird enthusiasts. The market will open at 7:00 a.m. with special activities for all ages taking place between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
There will be displays by the Nature Zone, Lynchburg Bird Club and the Virginia Master Naturalist, along with book signings with authors Marshall Faintich, Ph.D. and Joe Lively. Presentations by Naturalist and News and Advance weekly columnist, Thelma Dalmas and Naturalist and bird photographer, Jessica Rogers are also scheduled.

- Point of Honor To Host Day at the Point (2009/10/1)
The 12th Annual Fall Festival, Day at the Point, will be held on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of Point of Honor, 112 Cabell Street in Lynchburg. Admission is free. The event brings living history, food, kid's games and crafts, period music, and more to Point of Honor each year. The historic home was built in 1815 by the Cabell family and is among the finest examples of Federal architecture in Piedmont Virginia. This year's event will feature a number of new presentations and activities.

The rescue of Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest proves that individuals can make a difference. For nearly 200 years, the octagonal house at Poplar Forest had been home to many, from an American founder to American families. The house underwent many alterations over the years and its 4,812-acre was whittled down to a mere 50 as subdivisions surrounded it. In 1980, a North Carolina doctor bought the property in hopes of selling it to a preservation group. However, no one stepped up to the plate. The empty house began to deteriorate. By late 1983, a handful of local residents pledged to find a way to save Jefferson's extraordinary retreat.
